What Is Civil Excavation?
Civil excavation is the controlled removal of soil, rock, and material to allow the installation of underground utilities, drainage infrastructure, and other civil works. It is a fundamental part of delivering telecommunications, electrical, gas, water, sewer, and transport infrastructure across Western Australia.
The right excavation method depends on ground conditions, the presence of existing underground services, site access, environmental constraints, and programme requirements. Boretech operates a full fleet of excavators, vacuum trucks, and support equipment to deliver open cut trenching, non-destructive digging (NDD), and bulk earthworks across Perth metro and regional WA.
Why Clients Choose Boretech as Their Excavation Contractor in WA
Boretech has been delivering civil excavation works across Perth and regional WA since the rollout of the NBN network. Our crews handle a wide range of project types, from tight-access suburban trenching to mine-site earthworks deep in the Goldfields.
Capable Across All Ground Conditions
Boretech excavates in soft sand, limestone, clay, calcrete, compacted gravels, and solid granite. Equipment selection and methodology is matched to site conditions on every project, keeping production rates consistent regardless of what the ground presents. Our crews have worked across Perth metro sand profiles as well as hard rock environments up to 290 MPa in regional WA.
- Capable in sand, limestone, clay, calcrete, and hard rock
- Equipment matched to site-specific ground conditions
- Proven output in regional WA including Kalgoorlie and the Pilbara
- Experience in confined access and tight urban excavation
Safe to Excavate Near Live Services
Working near live gas, water, electrical, and telecommunications infrastructure requires tight controls at every stage. Every Boretech project starts with a Dial Before You Dig (DBYD) referral, on-site utility locating, and where needed, non-destructive digging (NDD) to positively expose existing services before any mechanical excavation begins. This approach keeps our crews safe, protects existing assets, and prevents the programme delays that come with a service strike.
- DBYD referral on every project prior to mobilisation
- Utility locating completed before mechanical works commence
- NDD used to positively expose services at critical locations
- SWMS compliance and service strike prevention training across all field personnel
Own Fleet, No Subcontracted Plant
Boretech runs its own fleet of excavators, vacuum trucks, skid steers, and support vehicles. There is no reliance on subcontracted plant, which means tighter control over mobilisation timing, maintenance standards, and operator quality across every project. The excavator range covers compact machines for restricted-access metro sites through to larger units suited to bulk earthworks and mine-site scopes.
- Company-owned excavator fleet
- Compact units for tight-access metropolitan sites
- Larger excavators suited to bulk earthworks and regional scopes
- Vacuum trucks available for NDD and spoil management
Single Contractor for Excavation and Trenchless Works
Because Boretech self-performs both excavation and directional drilling in-house, project teams can sequence open cut and trenchless works without waiting on a second contractor. For programmes that require both methods, this keeps scheduling clean and removes the coordination risk that comes with splitting the scope.
- In-house capability for both excavation and HDD
- No delays from subcontractor scheduling on mixed-method programmes
- Clean transition between open cut and trenchless scopes
- Reliable programme delivery for principal contractors and delivery partners
WA Safety and Compliance Standards Met on Every Project
All Boretech excavation works are delivered under site-specific Safe Work Method Statements, compliant with the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA). Field personnel are trained in confined space entry procedures where applicable and have hands-on experience working under live traffic management plans, road reserve permits, and environmental management plans.
- Compliant with the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA)
- SWMS-led project delivery on every scope
- WorkSafe Restricted Asbestos Removal Licence (WR2407) held for ACM encountered during excavation
- Experienced under live TMP, road reserve permits, and environmental constraints
How Boretech Manages Civil Excavation Projects
Boretech uses a structured approach to plan, mobilise, and execute excavation works across Perth metro and regional WA. Every project goes through the same core stages regardless of size or location.
Pre-Mobilisation Planning and DBYD Referral
Before any crew or equipment moves to site, the project team completes a full Dial Before You Dig (DBYD) referral and reviews all available service plans, geotechnical data, and site access information. Trench alignments and excavation profiles are planned against this data. Any gaps in service records are flagged for on-site verification before mechanical works begin.
Utility Locating and Service Verification
On-site utility locating is carried out across the full excavation corridor to identify the position and depth of existing underground assets. Where services are recorded near the proposed excavation, or where records are incomplete, non-destructive digging (NDD) is used to physically expose and confirm service locations. This step is not skipped, regardless of programme pressure.
Equipment Selection and Site Setup
Excavator type and size is matched to the scope, access constraints, and ground conditions specific to each project. Supporting equipment, including vacuum trucks for NDD, skid steers, compaction plant, and light vehicles, is mobilised based on what the job actually requires. Open Cut Excavation and Trenching
With services confirmed and equipment on site, mechanical excavation proceeds along the planned alignment. Trench dimensions, batter profiles, and shoring are managed to specification and adjusted for the ground conditions present. Spoil is handled on-site or removed as required by the project scope. Product types installed by Boretech in open cut excavations include:
- HDPE conduit and duct bundles for telecommunications networks
- Electrical duct for LV and HV power infrastructure
- PE gas pipe and reticulated sewer infrastructure
- Water main and stormwater drainage systems
Pipe and Conduit Installation
Product pipe, conduit, or duct bundles are laid, jointed, and tested within the open excavation. Bedding, select backfill, and concrete encasement are placed where specified by the design. Boretech works to the standards required by each network operator, whether that is NBN Co, Western Power, Water Corporation WA, or a mining client.
Reinstatement and Demobilisation
Once installation is confirmed, trench backfill is compacted in layers to the specified standard. Surface reinstatement, including pavement, kerbing, topsoil, or gravel as required, is completed before demobilisation. All excess spoil, drilling fluid, and site waste is removed. The scope is signed off against the project documentation before Boretech leaves site.
Who We Work With
Boretech delivers civil excavation works for clients across a broad range of sectors throughout WA, SA, and NSW.
Utility Network Operators
Boretech has a long track record of delivering excavation and underground installation works directly for utility network operators across WA. We have installed telecommunications conduit for NBN Co, Telstra, and TPG Telecom, electrical duct for Western Power, and gas and water infrastructure for licensed network operators. Our crews understand the specific installation standards, safety requirements, and documentation expected by each operator.
Principal Contractors
Many of Boretech's projects are delivered as a subcontract scope within a larger civil programme. We work regularly with principal contractors on road infrastructure, rail corridor, and major utility projects, providing reliable self-performed excavation, NDD, and HDD capability without the overhead of subcontracting again. For delivery partners managing complex programmes, a single subcontractor who can handle multiple methods is a scheduling and commercial advantage.
Mining and Resources Clients
Boretech mobilises to regional and remote WA for resource industry scopes, including mine site utility services, access road infrastructure, and camp electrical and water reticulation. Our regional base in Kalgoorlie supports faster mobilisation into the Goldfields, and our crews are experienced working under the safety and documentation requirements common on mine sites across WA. We have worked in hard rock conditions up to 290 MPa and have completed projects at Karara, in the Pilbara, and across the eastern Goldfields.
Local Government and Public Sector
We deliver civil excavation scopes for local government authorities across Perth metro and regional WA, including drainage upgrades, service relocations, and utility corridor works within road reserves. Projects are managed under road reserve permits and delivered in compliance with the specific reinstatement and pavement standards required by each council or road authority.

Open cut excavation is the preferred method for an excavation project when the ground, land access, soil conditions, and construction scope allow safe trenching and excavation work without major surface disruption. This approach is commonly used on civil projects involving drainage, infrastructure, telecommunications, sewer, electrical, gas, and water installation throughout Perth and Western Australia. Directional drilling is more suitable beneath roads, rail lines, and environmentally sensitive ground where surface excavation is not practical. Boretech provides both excavation services and directional drilling for earthmoving projects and commercial construction projects, helping clients choose the right contractor for efficiency, safety, excavation costs, and project delivery outcomes. Our expertise across earthmoving, trenching, civil works, and construction allows us to provide reliable solutions for projects of all sizes.
This process is safer than manual digging, traditional digging methods, or using a traditional excavator near underground infrastructure because it reduces utility strike risks, costly damage, and repair costs.
NDD, or non-destructive digging, is a professional excavation technique used before excavation work starts to safely locate underground infrastructure and services. Pressurised water and vacuum excavation equipment are used to expose utilities without damaging live assets during digging or earthmoving activities. Boretech uses NDD as a standard part of excavation services and civil works across Perth metro area construction projects, commercial projects, and infrastructure upgrades. This process improves safety, reduces excavation costs, increases efficiency, and helps excavation contractors maintain the highest standards during earthmoving projects and trenching operations. Our experienced team uses modern equipment and great communication to deliver reliable excavation solutions with minimal disruption to the site and surrounding ground.
Like hydro excavation, the loosened soil is removed using a powerful vacuum excavation system, allowing crews to visually confirm underground assets and safely expose buried utilities without damaging surrounding infrastructure.
