What Is Cable Hauling?

Cable hauling is the controlled installation of cable through underground conduit, ducts, or pits using winches, rollers, cable trailers, and tension monitoring rather than open trenching. The conduit is placed first, by directional drilling, trenching, or micro-tunnelling, and the cable is then drawn through it. Done correctly, hauling delivers the cable to its full length without exceeding the manufacturer’s pulling tension or bend radius, which is what protects the cable’s performance for the decades it sits in the ground.

Cable Schedule and Route Review

Before any drum or winch moves to site, the team reviews the cable schedule, duct route, and network operator standards against the actual conduit in the ground. Cable type, count, drum length, duct size, bend count, and total pull distance are checked to confirm the cable can be hauled in a single pull or where mid-point assistance is needed. Any run that risks exceeding pulling tension or bend radius is identified and re-planned before the cable is ordered to site, not discovered halfway through the pull.

DBYD, Service Location, and Duct Proving

A Dial Before You Dig referral is submitted and on-site service location carried out before any pit or duct work begins. Where existing services sit near the pits or duct route, non-destructive digging is used to expose and confirm them. The duct itself is proved with a mandrel and rod-and-rope to confirm it is clear, correctly sized, and continuous before the cable is committed to it. A blocked or undersized duct found at proving stage is a cheap problem; the same blockage found with cable halfway through is not.

Equipment Selection and Site Setup

Winch capacity, cable trailer, rollers, and guides are matched to the cable type and the pull. Compact setups are selected for tight metro pit-to-pit hauls, larger powered winches for long runs and heavier HV cable. Rollers and bellmouths are positioned at every pit and direction change to keep the cable off hard edges, and the bond and swivel are fitted to manage twist and protect the cable head.

The Haul

With the duct proved and equipment set, the cable is hauled to the route profile under continuous tension monitoring. Approved cable lubricant is applied to reduce friction on longer and multi-bend runs, and pull speed is controlled so tension stays inside the manufacturer’s limit for that cable. On long runs, the cable is figure-eighted at intermediate pits and re-hauled in stages, or mid-assist winches are used, so no single section is over-tensioned. Fibre, copper, LV, and HV are each hauled to their own handling rules rather than a single generic method.

Proving, Testing, and Network Operator Handover

Once the cable is in, continuity and integrity checks are completed to the project specification before the run is handed over. Fibre is presented for OTDR and splice-ready handover, copper for continuity, and power cable for the insulation and continuity testing required before energising. Boretech coordinates this proving and the documentation with the network operator or the splicing and termination crew so the haul is signed off clean. Cable is not left unproven in the duct on the assumption it will be tested later.

Reinstatement and Demobilisation

With the haul proven and accepted, pit lids are reseated, draw pits and surrounds are made good, and any surface reinstatement is completed to the council, Main Roads WA, or client standard. Cable offcuts, empty drums, and site waste are removed, and the scope is signed off against the cable schedule before Boretech leaves site.

IEN Project Avon Valley, WA

Boretech was contracted by THM Electrical to deliver hard rock drilling works for Ventia’s IEN Project in the Avon Valley, installing 7,139m of P63 HDPE pipe and 19 C8 pits through predominantly blue granite ground. The project required careful coordination with landowners, heritage monitors, and other stakeholders due to the environmentally and culturally sensitive location along the Avon River. Using a mix of all-terrain, dual rod, and air hammer drilling techniques, Boretech successfully completed difficult HDD works across challenging access areas, including major creek crossings and long drill shots of up to 297m, while meeting a tight project deadline.
